WHAT'S NEW IN THE 2010 GROCERY DISTRIBUTION ANALYSIS AND GUIDE?
The 2010 edition provides an in depth view of market shares for the year ending 2009.

To make the data more meaningful for use during 2010, we have deleted all stores that we know were closed in the January-April 2010 time frame.

We have also included new stores that have opened in the first four months of 2010, projecting their sales to a full year equivalent.

Our 2010 edition includes all the significant changes resulting from mergers, sales of stores, and closing of stores by chains and wholesalers, including but not limited to the following:

  • Aldi opened 85 new stores, including 29 in Dallas.
  • Affiliated Foods in Little Rock, Arkansas shut down all operations.
  • Times Supermarkets, in Hawaii, acquired Star Markets.
  • Weis Markets acquired 11 Giant Markets in Binghamton, NY
  • Supervalu sold 34 Albertsons stores in Utah to Associated Grocers, which have been renamed 'Fresh Markets'.
  • Supervalu sold 2 stores in Idaho to Ridleys
  • Supervalu sold most of its Shaw's stores in Connecticut to Wakefern Foods and Stop & Shop and closed the rest.
  • Coborn's acquired 2 Cub stores in Minnesota.
  • Supervalu sold 7 Biggs stores in Cincinnati to Remke Foods and closed the rest.
  • Albertsons, LLC closed 8 stores in Florida and sold 3 in Orlando to Sedano.
  • Brookshire Grocery Co. closed or sold its stores in Jackson, MS.
  • Ukrop's stores in Virginia were sold to Ahold's Giant Martin division and are now Martins.
  • Tops Markets acquired 79 stores from Penn Traffic and closed 6 of them.
  • Price Chopper acquired 6 P & C stores from Tops.
  • Giant Eagle acquired 5 P&C stores in Pennsylvania from Tops.
  • Walmart increased the number of its stores with full grocery departments by nearly 100 over the prior year. A number of these stores are not designated as Supercenters.
  • Walmart closed 10 Sam's Clubs and opened 6 new ones.

OUR ANNUAL MARKET SHARE STUDY IS SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT THAN THOSE PROVIDED BY OTHER COMPANIES

The following differences are worth noting:
We include membership clubs because their importance should not be ignored:
COSTCO has 566 Clubs and $45 billion in grocery sales
Sam's Club has 600 stores and $29 billion in grocery sales
BJ's has 186 stores and $5.6 billion in grocery sales
These powerful retail grocery outlets should be included in any market share study.

We include convenience store chains that have significant grocery volume:
e.g. 7-Eleven, Circle K, Kroger's Kwik Shops and Turkey Hill Minit Markets
There are thousands of these stores, which collectively do billions of dollars in Grocery sales.

WE UPDATE AND EVALUATE EACH COMPANY EVERY YEAR   We obtain information from a variety of sources, including, but not limited to retailers, wholesalers, the Internet, local market sources, trade associations, and trade media.

MAPS   We include 20 maps which show the precise location of all 378 metro areas, and we include an easy to use index which identifies the map location of each market.

TELEVISION COVERAGE   We list the source of television coverage for each metro/micro area. This provides an easy and logical way to evaluate the reach and effectiveness of local television advertising.

MARKET STATISTICS ON AN INDEX BASIS   The figures in this section are on an index basis and show how the market compares to the National Average on a per capita basis (U.S. average equals 100) for selected categories. The figures are projections from U.S. census figures and are provided for informational use only. They cannot be projected into accurate dollar sales figures for any metro area or TV market.

INDEX OF COMPANIES BY METRO AREAS OR TV MARKETS   This is an alphabetical listing of each company in the GUIDE, showing every Metro Area and TV market in which the company has stores. Through the use of this index a subscriber can see how wide a distribution gap is if a retailer does not carry his product.
